Surfing the Emotional Waves

When surfing through the emotional waves and rapids of life, there are four strategies that calm the storm. In addition, children need to learn the skills of emotions regulation that begins in toddlerhood and continues through adolescence. Both parents and children need to make the best choices of emotions expression even when they are feeling flooded by emotions. This session explores effective strategies and teaching that leads to emotional competence and relationships of understanding.

Draining Off High Intensity Behavior and Emotions

When in high intensity, children can become inflexible in their thinking and explosive in their patterns of behavior. Intensely “shocking” words and hurtful actions are almost always present as the process of escalation begins. It is at this point that parents fall into the trap of reflecting their child’s intensity which leads to the perfect storm. This session explores the four stages of escalation and the language that restores calm and effectively deals with the unresolved trigger.
