Session One: Underneath the Behavior

Description: When we take the time to watch our children, we begin to see just how wonderful, unique and vulnerable they are at moments in their lives. They are in the throes of mastering the process of development and the skills of a lifetime. As parents, it is essential to know what a child is grappling with developmentally, and ways to shift our perspective. Seeing life through a child’s perspective is the best way to become aware of and compassionate toward his or her developmental needs. It takes many years of research to understand how children develop, and this session pulls together the most consistent findings from neuroscience and decades of observations and experience so you can apply it in ways that are responsive to your child and family.

Session Two: The Power of Love

November 2, 2022
Description: Parenting can be the most gratifying and challenging responsibility imaginable. When parenting approaches miss the mark, the next generation raises their children in a way that tries to correct the errors. Yet, we can never miss the mark when we cultivate a relationship of with respectful love. Without it, children question their inherent worth over an entire lifetime. The quality of the parent-child relationship matters. As one sixteen-year old in New Jersey stated, “Loving me is the promise you made when you decided to have a child.” This session explores what is means to love respectfully.

Session Three: Expectations, Not Performance Standards

December 7, 2022
Description: Every child possesses the inner wisdom to navigate life’s journey; parents serve as their guide. Our goal is not to clear an obstacle-clear path or provide limitless freedom and choices, or to pressure them to perform to our pre-determined hopes and become blindly obedient, but to watch for the dangers ahead and set clear expectations that position them for a life of success. This session examines the difference between expectations and performance standards the outcomes of each.

Session Four: Learning for a Lifetime

Description: There are hundreds of things children could benefit from learning that would serve them for a lifetime. As I watched people board the Sky link at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport, I began to wonder what became of letting older people have last seat available as an act of kindness and why the content on their phone was more important than the person standing next to them.

I started to think, what were the things I thought were important for my children to know. The question for this session is “What would be on your list?”

Session Five: Help Your Child Develop Good Judgment

February 8, 2022
Description: No one is born with good judgment and an ability to make wise decisions. This is a skill that children learn through experience combined with reflection. Dr. Kerr L. White said, “Judgment develops from experience; good judgment develops from bad experiences.” In this session, we will explore how we as parents and care-givers can give our children experience in making decisions, giving them the opportunity to reflect on those decisions and learn from them.

Session Six: Cultivating A Sense of Conscience

March 8, 2022
Description: We have all heard stories about children who have infringed on the rights of others. sometimes seriously. We may wonder how or why this happens. Part of the answer may be a weak or lacking sense of conscience. There is little or no sense of obligation to act responsibly because the child has not been held to the highest standards of character. This session explores how we can guide children toward knowing what is right, loving what is right, and living what is right, not just for their benefit but for the benefit of others.

Session Seven: Embrace Your Child’s Riches

Session Eight: Teaching Your Children How to Be Angry

May 3, 2022
Description: “Do not teach your children never to be angry; teach them how to be angry.” Lyman Abbott
This is one of the most critical tasks of childhood…. learning to tolerate the wounds of everyday life without moving into reactive anger. Children (and adults!) who can do this are able to work things out with others and manage themselves to achieve their goals. Anger is a normal, healthy and universal emotion. What does “constructive” handling of anger look like? In this session, we will discuss what anger may look like for different children. We will explore the common triggers of anger and how we can prevent it from happening whenever possible.
